Change in URL for Updated Online Course on Human Participant Protections: Education for Research Teams
An updated version of the online continuing education course, Human Participant Protections, is available at http://cme.cancer.gov/c01/. This free, Web-based course provides information about the rights and welfare of human participants in research. The course satisfies the NIH requirement for education on the protection of human research subjects in order to obtain federal research funds.

NIH Statement on Sharing Research Data
NIH believes that data sharing is essential for expedited translation of research results into knowledge, products, and procedures to improve human health. NIH supports the timely release and sharing of final research data from NIH-supported studies for use by other researchers. Starting with the October 1, 2003 receipt date, investigators submitting an NIH application seeking $500,000 or more in direct costs in any single year are expected to include a plan for data sharing or state why data sharing is not possible. http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/not-od-03-032.html

Reminder to Submit Complete and Up-to-Date Other Support Information
NIH requires that applicants submit complete and up-to-date "other support" information before an award can be made. Other support includes all financial resources available in direct support of an individual's research endeavors. This information assists staff in identifying potential scientific and budgetary overlap. The reasons for identifying overlap are to ensure that appropriate levels of effort are committed to the project, and that there is no duplication of funding for scientific aims. Commitment overlap occurs when an individual's time commitment exceeds 100%, whether or not salary support is requested. http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/not-od-03-029.html

Resubmission of Unfunded RFA Applications and Applications with a New Grant Activity Mechanism
This NIH notice describes a change in practice regarding resubmissions of three categories of grant applications. The changes are as follows.
(1) When an application that was submitted in response to an RFA is not funded, the investigator may resubmit the application as a NEW investigator-initiated application.
(2) When a previously unfunded investigator-initiated application is submitted in response to an RFA, it is prepared as a NEW application.
(3) When an unfunded application is resubmitted under a different grant mechanism, it is prepared as a NEW application.
Note that the new application must be submitted by the scheduled due date for new applications. It must not include an introduction describing the changes made, and the text must not be marked to indicate the changes. The reviewers of the "new" application will not be provided with the previous summary statement. http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/not-od-03-019.html
