FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS OF PROGRAM DIRECTORS

What is the difference between RFAs (Request for Applications) and PAs (Program Announcements)?
Both RFAs and PAs are formal statements that invite applications in a well-defined scientific area to accomplish specific program objectives. Whereas RFAs have set-aside funds, PAs generally do not have such funds set aside. And whereas PAs are reviewed by the Center for Scientific Review, RFA applications are reviewed by special committees that are assembled expressly for the review of a specific RFA.

What is the difference between a PA, a PAR, and a PAS?
PARs and PASs are specials types of PAs. A PAR (program announcement with specific referral) specifies that applications will be referred to the NCI Division of Extramural Activities. A PAS (program announcement with set-aside funds) indicates that funds will be set aside to support research proposed in response to the announcement.

What is a minority supplement and how can I apply for one?
The program announcement, Research Supplements for Underrepresented Minorities (PA-01-079), was established to address the need to increase the number minority scientists participating in biomedical research and the health-related sciences. For the purpose of this PA, underrepresented minority students and investigators are defined as individuals belonging to a particular ethnic or racial group that has been determined by the grantee institution to be underrepresented in biomedical, behavioral, clinical, or social science. Principal investigators may consider administrative supplements for minority individuals who may be high school students, undergraduate students, post-baccalaureate students, or faculty.

A request for a supplement may be submitted at any time. Complete instructions and contact information are provided in the PA. Note that applications should be mailed directly to the Comprehensive Minority Biomedical Branch at NCI. It is always a good idea to let your program director know that you are submitting a supplement request. http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/pa-01-079.html
