New Institute of Medicine Report on Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Released
Fulfilling the Potential of Cancer Prevention and Early Detection, a report by the Institute of Medicine, is now available from the National Academies Press (www.nap.edu). In this report, the National Cancer Policy Board reviews the evidence that cancer incidence rates can be dramatically reduced through prevention and early detection. Among the topics examined in this report are the effectiveness of screening and interventions to alter smoking, eating, and exercise habits; professional education and training needs; federal and state programs that support cancer prevention and early detection; and research trends and opportunities.

National Cancer Advisory Board Ad Hoc P30/P50 Working Group Report Available Online
Advancing Translational Cancer Research: A Vision of the Cancer Center and SPORE Programs of the Future, a report of the P30/P50 Ad Hoc Working Group, was released in February 2003. This working group was convened to examine how the P30 (Cancer Center) and P50 (SPORE) award mechanisms might best be positioned to support and facilitate increased discovery and translation of research into the future. In response to flattening budgets, NCI is seeking mechanisms for improving the efficiency and integration of the P30 and P50 programs, while at the same time maximizing the number of institutions performing translational research.
