BBRB Newsletter: Winter 2004

Search:

Greetings Colleagues! Welcome to the Winter 2004 edition of the BBRB Newsletter. We are starting off the new year with a new name. We are now the:

Basic and Biobehavioral Research Branch

As you may know, our branch promotes, manages, and supports a wide range of research activities across the cancer spectrum, ranging from basic research in social, cognitive, and psychological processes (e.g., risk perception, decision making) to biological mechanisms of psychosocial processes related to disease. We have believed for some time that our original name, the Basic Biobehavioral Research Branch, was confusing to the extramural scientific community, prompting images of bench scientists conducting research. We felt that the name did not do justice to the breadth of our research interests.

For this reason, we have made the subtle but hopefully informative name change from Basic Biobehavioral Research Branch to Basic and Biobehavioral Research Branch. We hope this will highlight our dual interests in basic behavioral and social sciences research (see the report on the Decision Making in Cancer Control initiative in this issue) and biobehavioral research (see the report on the BiMPED initiative in this issue).

Please take a moment to review this edition of the BBRB Newsletter, which focuses on our two current initiatives: the Basic and Applied Decision Making in Cancer Control initiative and the Biological Mechanisms of Psychosocial Effects on Disease (BiMPED) initiative.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season from all of us in the Basic and Biobehavioral Research Branch.

Michael Stefanek, Ph.D.
Wendy Nelson, Ph.D.
Paige McDonald, Ph.D.
Paul Han, M.D.
Stephanie Hess, B.A.
