As obvious as it may sound, submitting your application to the right place at the right time is the most critical step in getting your research project funded. The Office of Extramural Research provides a list of standard NIH receipt dates, review and award cycles, and submission procedures at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/submissionschedule.htm
- Keep in mind that it generally takes three to six months to write a grant application, and approximately another nine months from the time you submit until you receive funding (if approved)
- Check with your institution's business office regarding deadlines for getting their signature before sending your application to NIH
- Find out what documentation you will need to prepare, especially if you will be researching animals or human subjects
- Once your application is submitted, study section review takes place in about 4 months
- Two months after the review, the advisory council meets
- The earliest possible grant award is approximately 10 months from time of submission
