Description of the Centers of Excellence in Cancer Communication Research II Initiative

The second initiative of the Centers of Excellence in Cancer Communication Research continues to:

  • be the centerpiece of NCI’s Extraordinary Opportunity in Cancer Communications,
  • include hypothesis-driven research projects and pilot or developmental research projects, cores, and plans for career development, and
  • use best practices in communication science to extend the reach of biomedical benefits equitably throughout the population.

The Extended Scope of CECCR II Initiative to include Clinically Relevant Research

In the second initiative, a special emphasis is placed on patient-centered communications needed to improve health and quality of life outcomes across the “Cancer Care Continuum.” A minimum of one research project in each CECCR II must be directly relevant to clinical settings. The projects emphasize that effective communications are needed to:

  • foster "healing relationships,"
  • exchange information between the healthcare delivery team, the patient, and the patient’s family,
  • respond to emotions,
  • manage uncertainty,
  • support decision making, and
  • enable patient self-management
