Dialogue on Dissemination

Dialogue on Dissemination - Sponsored by the National Cancer Institute

Background Statement

The Dialogue on Dissemination meetings are part of a larger effort to clarify the various concepts used to describe the translation of research into practice and develop models for effective dissemination. As part of its ongoing commitment to closing the gap between research discovery and program delivery, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) sponsored a series of four Dialogue on Dissemination events convening experts in the fields of public health, clinical practice, and dissemination. An initial conference call in August 2004 led to three subsequent meetings. Community and clinical experts met, respectively, in November and December 2004 to discuss the development of research and implementation agendas for dissemination. In January 2005, a final meeting focusing on inter-organizational collaborations was attended by many of the participants from the previous meetings, as well as additional experts–including representatives of the President's Cancer Panel (PCP). The PCP has spent the last year collecting public testimony on Translating Research to Reduce the Burden of Cancer. Findings from the PCP and Dialogue on Dissemination were presented at the January meeting; the groups will continue to work together to leverage their findings. Insights garnered from the Dialogue on Dissemination series will be used by the National Cancer Institute and shared with other organizations to improve the dissemination of research findings and evidence-based practices.
