• How can I participate in the institute?
  
  You must go through the application process to participate. It is expected that 25 participants will be selected based on the quality of their applications.
  
  
• How can I find out more about which topics will be covered in the institute?

• Is this opportunity only open to researchers, or is it also open to practitioners?
  
  Strong preference will be given to applicants who are active researchers, but all are welcome to apply. If you are not an active researcher, make sure to clearly articulate in your application what you hope to gain from the institute and how it will affect your professional development.
  
  
• Can I forego the application process if I am willing to pay my own way?
  
  No. You must apply to the institute in order to be considered for participation.
  
  
• Because NCI is a sponsor, will stronger preference be given to applicants who are doing cancer research?
  
  No. Equal preference will be given to all applicants regardless of their research background.
  
  
• If I do not meet the institute eligibility requirements, can I participate in the institute if I pay my way?
  
  No. Applicants will not be able to pay their own way in lieu of meeting the institute requirements.
  
  
• What counts as a behavioral science course?
  
  Courses that focused on the psychological mechanisms underlying human behavior count as behavioral science courses.
  
  
• If I have not taken the requisite classes, but have strong training in the areas covered by the classes, should I apply?
  
  Yes, you may apply in this situation. In your application, be sure to clearly explain your training in the areas for which you have not taken the requisite classes.
  
  
• Do I need to be a U.S. citizen in order to apply to the institute?
  
  Yes. With no exceptions, you must be a U.S. citizen in order to participate.
  
  
• Do I need to have a doctoral degree in order to apply to the institute?
  
  Yes. If you do not currently have your degree, but will have your degree prior to the start of the institute, you are eligible to participate. However, preference will be given to applicants who have already received their degree and have begun to develop an independent line of research.
  
  
• Does the letter of recommendation need to be sent in separate from my application materials?
  
  No. You can send in the letter of recommendation along with your application materials. If you prefer, the letter may be enclosed in a sealed and signed envelope, but this is not necessary. If you prefer that the letter of recommendation is sent in separate from your application materials, it should be sent to the same address that the application materials are sent.
